Privilege of Community

I wish I remembered where I read this and I wish I saved it. It is not verbatim, but the post explained the privilege we have to be burdened by your community. Essentially, the poster talked about how it is a good thing to have to show up for the people around you, to actively plan your life to be there, and embrace pushing past the desire to hermit inside of our comfy homes. For me, it was a good reminder that putting in the effort to be present with people I care for (and might not care for!) is so worth it. When I see an event shared, I should put in the effort to check my calendar and see how I can attend. Even if it's only for 30 mins, and it might be out of my way.
I was more active and outgoing a few years ago, and slipped into my comfortable shell more recently. There's nothing wrong with being home and recharging my batteries. What I want to is to get back into being around the city and showing up for all kinds of events, from protests to performances to workshops.
Last weekend I got to see many of the great people that were part of Togather Chinatown at the Mah Society. When the invitation came out, I already had another thing planned with a friend but I saw that I could attend the first bit of the party with enough time to keep my original plans. And so I went and I had a fun hr catching up with friends.
I know that I have enough hours and the privilege to make it out to people's things. This is community building and then afterward we can crash on our couches together.
